New Democrats Want Budget Help for Seniors, Job Creation, Environment

Mon 8 Mar 2010

OTTAWA – New Democrats have moved an amendment to the federal budget calling on help for seniors, shelving the corporate tax handouts, investing in job creation and strengthening our commitment to a clean-energy future.

“Our goal is to make Parliament work for all Canadians but we cannot support the budget as written,” Sault MP Tony Martin said. “We want to shelve the corporate handouts and use the money instead for better priorities for people in places like Sault Ste. Marie Algoma.”

“Last week’s budget squanders billions on handouts for banks and oil companies – but does nothing for the real victims of the recession. Nothing for seniors living in poverty. Nothing for half a million hard-working Canadians set to exhaust their Employment Insurance benefits with no job to go to.”

The New Democrat amendment calls for the full protection of pensions in all cases of corporate insolvency, work for increases to the CPP and QPP, creating family-supporting jobs and building a clean-energy future
