New Democrats Table Bill to Exempt GST on Poppies

Tue 10 Nov 2009

OTTAWA – New Democrat MP Malcolm Allen (Welland) has introduced a private members bill intended to support the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign by eliminating the GST from the purchase of poppies and poppy wreathes.

“Exempting the GST from the Royal Canadian Legion’s purchase of poppies and poppy wreathes for its annual campaign will directly support their fundraising goals by reducing the overall cost of the campaign,” said Allen. “It is incumbent for governments to make every effort to support Canada’s veterans and committing to this exemption will convey the respect the honour our veterans rightfully deserve.”

“This is really a no brainer,” said Sault MP Tony Martin. “Our legions do important work for veterans. They struggle with funds and could use this extra five per cent that they now pay the government. The poppy campaign symbolizes the honour and sacrifice of our veterans and I believe all funds should go to them.”

Mr. Allen is unsure how much the Legion pays out in GST, but says any amount is wrong. About 18 million poppies are distributed each year. After expenses, about $8 million is placed in trust to be used to provide financial assistance to needy ex-servicemen and women and to their dependents.
