I am a student at McMaster university in Hamilton and recently came across your Bill c-545 "An Act to Eliminate Poverty in Canada."  I think that this Bill is a great move and as such I would like to offer my support and am wondering if there is any way for me to contribute to the passing of this bill.

Just read C-545, It's the best Private Members Bill I've read in a long time.

Its interesting because there was a whole discussion over the proper role of commissioners at the Canadian Political Science Association annual conference this year.  Upon reflection, the amount of individuals living in poverty in Canada is greater than any other problem facing our society, and the need to create an officer of parliament monitoring poverty in Canada is paramount to creating a just society.

Last year in Alberta, Canada’s wealthiest province, Statistics Canada reported that there were over 78,000 children living below the

poverty line. As the Liberal critic for Children and Youth Services, I find that figure unconscionable especially given our Sustainability Fund in the neighborhood of $15 Billion.

Yesterday, as vice chair of our all party Standing  Policy Committee on the Economy, I listened to a number of presentations expressing concern about our Minister of Employment’s unilateral decision to freeze the minimum wage at $8.80.

“We are proud of your appointment and would be honoured to welcome you “home”, to both celebrate your appointment and to profile the considerable growth and diversity experienced by Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma communities,” Martin wrote.

I am so glad to see this inter party co-operation to fight  increased poverty in Canada. Much of this is caused by the policies of the Harper conservatives, Harper cut of inflation adjustments to their seniors Old Age Security back in October 08.

John Cartwright, The Toronto Star, July 11, 2010)  We are told that the G20 leaders left Toronto agreeing on one main thing — an austerity agenda to reduce deficits within three years. We have all heard about the government budget deficits in Canada. The feds and the province have massive shortfalls because of the global recession and money for infrastructure stimulus.
