(Frank Dobrovnik, The Sault Star, June 7, 2010)  Tony Martin doesn't believe last year's failed attempt to topple Stephen Harper's Conservative government has turned Canadians off a Liberal-NDP coalition government.

Rather, the Sault Ste. Marie New Democrat MP believes it "opened people's eyes to the possibility that this kind of thing could happen. I don't think people were ready (at that time), and the Conservatives took advantage of that."

MPs and staff to participate in ethics training

OTTAWA – New Democrats announced today they will work to implement a key recommendation from the Oliphant Commission Report that is addressed to leaders of opposition parties.  Justice Oliphant’s Recommendation #14 calls on party leaders to require their Members of Parliament to participate in training on the Conflict of Interest Code for Members of the House of Commons.

OTTAWA – Today, New Democrats are celebrating the unanimous passage of their opposition day motion on the risks of unconventional oil and gas exploration.

At the last minute, the Conservative government, which has been arguing that existing regulations are strong and do not need to be changed, voted with New Democrats and other opposition parties to launch a government-wide review of safety regulations on the all development of risky oil, such as oil sands and deep sea drilling.

OTTAWA— To kick off this year’s Environment Week, New Democrat Environment Critic Linda Duncan (Edmonton-Strathcona) today challenged Members of Parliament to make this environment week count.

“There are a number of concrete measures Members of Parliament can take this week to show their commitment to environmental protection,” said Duncan. “Every MP will have a chance to stand up and vote for or against the environment this week, as the NDP’s amendments to the Budget bill and an NDP motion are on the agenda.”
