June 2010

I am home for the summer months, looking forward to meeting you at any number of Sault and Algoma community events I will be attending. Beside enjoying being in the riding, I particularly enjoy the more relaxed time to meet and chat with constituents. The last week of Parliament was remarkable as it included introducing my legislation, An Act to Eliminate Poverty in Canada. I have also just returned from Toronto and the alternate summit, speaking to some 250 people from around the world gathered for the G8 and G20 meetings. Here is a report on some of my recent activity both here and in Ottawa and also announcements on some summer events.  May everyone have a safe and enjoyable summer.

April 2010

April 2010

I am happy to send you my April MP e-newsletter. Looking at my April calendar, I met Habitat for Humanity, Canadian Federation of Medical Students, Sault Algoma Farmers Market, Goodwill Industries Ottawa, Canadian and Ontario Cattlemen's Association, Canadian Police Association, among others. I enjoyed a constituency week including exchanging views with Korah Collegiate civics classes and visiting the Indian Friendship Centre. Helping the poor here is never far from my goals when I am on the national or international stage, as it was earlier this month in Montreal on a panel at the Basic Income Conference. Here is my report on some of our current work

In the News

Credit Card Relief: My Northern Ontario caucus colleague, Glenn Thibeault, did a phenomenal job last Friday telling stories and tips for constituents on credit card relief. Government has to protect consumers and small business from financial institutions turning huge profits on high interest and hidden fees.  Read more.....

Pension and Retirement Savings Campaign: I got into politics believing together citizens can make a difference. I like our New Democrat campaign collecting stories from either pensioners or others saving for retirement to send to the prime minister. Sault Algoma residents are invited to add their stories to Canadians from coast to coast to coast joining a campaign to pressure the government to fix serious flaws in Canada’s retirement savings system.  Read more...

Martin Gets Federal HCR Funding Commitment: Part of my work is to secure funding and to keep an issue before government. That happened twice in the past few months on the Huron Central Railway file with questions I asked in Question Period. It's official: The federal government has committed to providing Huron Central Rail with $33 million for infrastructure improvements.  Read more...

Fairness at the Pumps? The government's proposed "Fairness at the Pump Act" is too little, too late and won't stop the other real gas gouging hurting consumers, New Democrats said today. Tony Martin said it is "weak legislation that misses the real gas gouging hurting consumer".   Read more...

Tribute in Parliament to Area Mullticulturalism: Sault MP Tony Martin paid tribute today to The Algoma Multicultural Centre, Passport To Unity, Algoma University, the Labour Council, Steelworkers and faith groups for fostering the growing multicultural identity of the community.   Read more...

Aboriginal Petition:  I am always happy to introduce in the House of Commons local petitions on important causes. "Sault MP Tony Martin introduced a petition today to extend funding for the Aboriginal Healing Foundation as New Democrats make a last-minute appeal directly to the Prime Minister." Read more...

Tribute to Clarence Dungey: Statements are another part of my work and I especially like to find local riding stories to profile. EcoEnergy Cancellation: The federal Conservative government is making a huge mistake canceling the successful retrofit program that provided incentives for Canadians to reduce their energy consumption, Sault MP Tony Martin said today.  Read more...

Enews for September 25, 2009

Welcome to the second issue of my electronic newsletter where I will continue to share highlights of my work on your behalf in Parliament and in our community.  I've often said in Ottawa that the riding of Sult Se. Marie Algoma is a snapshot of Canada - vibrant, urban and rural, a remarkable collage of business and industry, post-secondary institutions, First Nations, agriculture, the arts, youth and seniors, and so much more.  In this newsletter I share highlights of my work on behalf of the citizens of Sault Ste. Marie and its immediate areas as well as news on new resources for rural povery, grants for seniors' programs and a few community events some have told us about.  Information on adding or removing names for this e-newsletter is at the bottom.

Best regards, Tony

Community Newsletter Fall 2009

Dear friends,
I am happy to report in this fall newsletter on the hard work and results of our much larger Northern Ontario New Democrat caucus.  We report on federal funding to the riding, making FedNor independent, rail infrastructure investment, helping the forestry sector and much more.

I hope everyone was able to enjoy the summer. I don’t think there is a better place to be in Canada in the summer than Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma. It was good to be home and work out of the riding office and see many of you at our various festivals and community celebrations.
